Where North Carolina school jobs are posted
Most states leave a job seeker to check district websites one at a time — in North Carolina that would be 115 of them. The state does not. In spring 2020, NC DPI “partnered with TeachNC and PowerSchool to develop a true statewide job board that encompassed all NC school districts and charter schools,” and that board runs today at northcarolina.schoolspring.com, reached from TeachNC as northcarolina.teach.org/jobs.
Read DPI’s own description of how it works, because it explains nearly everything confusing about applying in this state. The board “will integrate automatically with your applicant tracking solution (including Applitrack and SearchSoft) so that as jobs are posted they receive immediate nationwide exposure. As candidates seek to apply, they will be redirected to your applicant tracking solution to apply.” The statewide board is a window, not a front door. You find the job there; you apply somewhere else.
Somewhere else is a different system in each district. Three of the largest, checked directly:
- Wake County Public School System recruits at careers.wcpss.net and sends returning applicants to an iCIMS portal.
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools recruits at hiring.cmsk12.org, a site whose footer credits SchoolMint Engage while the application itself runs on PowerSchool’s applicant tracking system.
- Guilford County Schools points from gcsnc.com/careers to Frontline’s AppliTrack.
Coverage is wide but not universal: as of July 2024, DPI recorded “93 districts and 91 charter schools live on the PowerSchool application system,” with 39 more charters still configuring. Since 1 July 2025 public school units pay DPI directly for it, at $0.68 per student rising to $0.72 by 2027/28 — so which system a small charter uses is now partly a budget decision.
What each place will actually email you
This is the part worth checking before you build a routine around any one site.
| Statewide board (SchoolSpring) | Free alerts. SchoolSpring’s own site description invites you to “sign up for daily or weekly job alert emails,” and the account area carries job-notification preferences. Cadence is a digest, by design. |
|---|---|
| Wake County (WCPSS) | Its careers site offers “Get Job Alerts and join our Talent Network,” with a sign-up. |
| Guilford County | Applications run through Frontline AppliTrack, which is an application system rather than a public alerting product. |
| Charlotte-Mecklenburg | The district’s How to Apply page describes browsing openings or connecting with a recruiter; we found no candidate alert sign-up advertised there. |
So the honest picture in North Carolina is not that alerting is missing. It is that alerting is email, on a daily or weekly cycle, and split across systems — one subscription for the statewide board, another for each district that runs its own.
The dates the law actually fixes
North Carolina’s hiring clock looks nothing like California’s. There is no March notice deadline here. The statutory sequence sits at the end of the school year.
| Not later than May 1 | The superintendent submits the budget and budget message to the board of education (G.S. 115C-427(b)). |
|---|---|
| Not later than May 15 | The board submits its approved budget to the county commissioners (G.S. 115C-429(a)). |
| No later than June 1 | A superintendent who decides not to recommend a renewed contract must give the teacher written notice (G.S. 115C-325.3(d)). |
| By June 15 | The board notifies a teacher whose contract will not be renewed (G.S. 115C-325.3(e)) — later if a hearing was requested. |
| On or before July 1 | The county commissioners complete action on the school budget (G.S. 115C-429(b)), or a later date the board agrees to. |
| Monday closest to Aug 26 | The earliest opening date for students, year-round schools excepted; the State Board may waive it for good cause to the Monday closest to August 19 (G.S. 115C-84.2(d)). |
Two consequences follow. First, a district that does not know its county appropriation until July has a genuine reason to keep hiring into August, against a start date the legislature has pinned near the end of that month. Second, North Carolina teachers are on contracts, not tenure: under one year for teachers with fewer than three years’ service, and one, two or four years after that (G.S. 115C-325.3(a)). Renewal decisions therefore recur on a short cycle.
What this page will not tell you
Which month has the most postings. No North Carolina agency publishes posting-volume data by month, so any confident “NC jobs peak in X” is folklore. What is published is churn: DPI reported a 2024–25 teacher attrition rate of 10.11%, up from 9.88%, and a vacancy rate of 7.4%, down from 7.6%, across the state’s 115 districts — about one teaching position in thirteen standing vacant. Openings are not seasonal scarcity here.
Licensure and substitutes, briefly
NC DPI issues the Initial Professional License, converted to the Continuing Professional License at three years’ experience, plus a Residency License route requiring employment in an NC public school alongside enrolment in an approved preparation program, an Emergency License and Permit to Teach, and a CTE Provisional License. Out-of-state applicants are evaluated on comparable exams and effectiveness data from their previous state. DPI’s licensure pages are the only authority worth trusting on your own case.
Substitute rules are your district’s, not the state’s. The General Assembly gives the State Board power to make provision for substitutes and sets pay floors — 65% of an entry-level teacher’s daily rate for a substitute holding a certificate, 50% without one (G.S. 115C-12(8)) — and it puts criminal history checks in local hands, with each board required to adopt and uniformly apply its own policy; substitute teachers are named in the statute’s definition of school personnel (G.S. 115C-332). Everything else varies. Wake County lists a teaching licence for certified substitutes or a high school diploma or GED plus SETT/ETT training for non-certified, a half-day orientation, and a background check, at $135 and $120 a day. Charlotte-Mecklenburg requires 21 years of age and a high school diploma, a background check, drug test and two supervisor-level references, at $151 and $129 a day, and asks substitutes to work at least one assignment a month to stay in the pool. Check the board you want to work for, not a state page.
One naming note that costs people search results: North Carolina statute calls the classified roles teacher assistants, office support personnel, custodial personnel and transportation personnel (G.S. 115C-12(9)). If you search for “paraeducator” or “instructional aide” out of California habit, you will miss postings.
How to watch all of it at once
AlertEd watches the statewide North Carolina board at northcarolina.schoolspring.com — the DPI/TeachNC board, and the largest single source in our index, carrying several thousand open North Carolina postings at any time. Save a search for a role and a county or district, and the free tier sends a daily digest of what matched. AlertEd+ pushes a match to your phone within about five minutes.
The board’s own free email alerts already cover the daily-digest case, so be clear about what is different: push instead of email, a whole county or role instead of pre-picking districts one at a time, and the same saved search working in 46 states and Washington, DC when you move. If a daily email from SchoolSpring is all you need, that is a perfectly good answer and it is free. AlertEd is on iPhone, Android and the web.
